The Welch Way

24 Lessons from the world greatest CEO

Jack Welch transformed GE in to world's most valuable corporation- and became one of the history's most admired and successful CEO's.

  1. Lead not Manage : Jack Welch is all about leadership, not management. What we are looking for ..are leaders at every level who can energize, excite and inspire rather than enervate, depress and control.
  2. Get Less formal : You must realize how important it is to maintain the kind of corporate informality that encourages a ..training class to comfortably challenge boss's pet ideas.
  3. Blow up bureaucracy : Anything that you can do to simplify will reduce bureaucracy.
  4. Face reality: Don't kid yourself .It always better to start with reality and making right decisions based on reality.
  5. Simplify: You can't believe how hard it is for people to be simple, how much they fear being simple.Clear tough-minded people are most simple.
  6. See change as an opportunity
  7. Lead by energizing others.
  8. Defy tradition:  Don't be afraid to buck conventional wisdom.
  9. Make intellect rule : The desire, and the ability, of an organization to continuously learn from any source,anywhere-and to rapidly convert this learning in to action- is its ultimate competitive advantage.
  10. Pounce every day: Pouncing everyday means moving faster than competitor to win business, please customers and snap up opportunities.
  11. Put values first
  12. Manage less: You can't do everything yourself. The key to leading is developing and nurturing great leaders. You will never know how far people can go unless you give them the opportunity to try.
  13. Involve everyone : Business is "all about capturing intellect from every person..the more people you can capture from, the better the intellect.
  14. Rewrite the agenda : Be prepared for unexpected.
  15. Live Speed: Speed is everything. It is the indispensable ingredient in competitiveness.
  16. Instill confidence:
  17. Set stretch goals:  The whole point of stretch is to ask how good you can be ? Punishing for falling short of a stretch goal runs counter to the Welch way. He said that if the company aimed for 15 and made 12, they would celebrate.
  18. Eliminate the boundaries : Boundary less behavior evaluates ideas based on their merit, not on the rank of the person who came up with them.
  19. Articulate a vision:
  20. Get good ideas from everywhere
  21. Spark others to perform
  22. Quality is your job. Never think that quality is someone else's job.
  23. Change never ends.
  24. Have fun.
